Pay attention to us and help the growth of the paper and plastic industry! As an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional packaging materials, Dell's bamboo pulp molded packaging is certified to be converted into fertilizer, allowing customers to dispose of it in an easier and more environmentally friendly way.
Oliver Campbell, Senior Product Packaging Manager, Dell, said: "Developing packaging that is lightweight and protects products during transport not only eliminates the need to cut down hardwood trees, but they can also be absorbed by the land to provide the nutrients needed for new plants to grow – these are the long-term, sustainable solutions we want to provide our customers." We are exploring new areas of eco-friendly packaging and striving to make product packaging with more innovative agricultural materials.
Since November 2009, Dell has been using bamboo cushions as packaging for the Mini 10 and Mini 10v netbooks. Recently, driven by a commitment to make it easy and affordable for customers to go green, Dell expanded its use of bamboo packaging to include a large number of Dell Inspiron laptops.
Why Choose Bamboo as a Packaging Material?
Fast growth: Bamboo, a herbaceous plant, is the fastest growing plant in the world. It grows up to 24 inches per day and can harvest a full growth cycle in 3 to 7 years, much faster than the average hardwood tree. Reasonable thinning of bamboo forests can improve the carbon sequestration capacity of bamboo forests, and if they are not cut, the carbon sequestration capacity of bamboo forests will reach a high point and then significantly decrease. The cut bamboo is made into bamboo pulp board by reasonable technology, which can be used in bamboo
pulp molding and bamboo pulp papermaking and other fields.
Toughness: Thanks to its tensile properties that are stronger than steel, bamboo protects technical equipment during transport.
Ensuring sustainable development
Dell is committed to partnering with Unisource Global Solutions (UGS), a bamboo packaging supplier, to ensure that all production processes are of the highest standards. Dell uses bamboo raw materials in accordance with the relevant regulations and standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). At the same time, Dell and UGS have worked together to ensure that all links in the production chain, from the bamboo forest to the production equipment, are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
Dell has partnered with Georgia Pacific, UGS and Environmental Packaging International to certify the viability of recycling bamboo's eco-friendly packaging.
Environmentally friendly: The growth of bamboo promotes soil health. It has deep roots that prevent soil erosion. And, if the bamboo is harvested properly, there is no need for secondary planting.
The 3Cs of simplified packaging
Oliver said that Dell's approach to developing and using eco-friendly packaging solutions is based on the 3Cs: volume (reducing the size of the box), content (what materials are used in the box), and convenience of recycling (cycling, using materials that can be recycled directly down the street).
In line with its previous commitments, Dell will fully achieve a "waste-free packaging stream" by 2020.
Specifically, this includes two aspects:
One is to ensure that Dell's packaging is made from 100% sustainable materials, including materials that are recyclable, rapidly recycled, or derived from waste;
The second is to ensure that Dell's packaging is 100% recyclable or decomposable.
In conjunction with the new packaging measures, Dell also announced that it will use a new sustainable material, wheat straw, for laptop boxes produced in China.
Currently, a large number of Chinese farmers dispose of wheat straw by incineration, causing air pollution and related health problems. Since August 2015, Dell has been mass-producing wheat straw
cartons and using them in 15% of its packaging boxes. The rest of the
cartons will be prioritized for recycled fibers. These straw
cartons can be recycled and reused in the same shape and performance as regular
cartons.
Dell will use 200 tonnes of wheat straw per year from farmers in Yangzhou, China. This initiative will reduce CO2 emissions by 180 tonnes per year, equivalent to sequestering carbon over 10 years of planting more than 4,600 seedlings.
Acer Wireless Mouse丨Wireless Mouse Packaging Customer: Acer Inc. Design: Acer Inc.
Acer's eco-friendly and versatile mouse packaging not only shows Acer's innovation in packaging design, but also reflects Acer's pursuit of sustainable development beyond the scope of products. The mouse packaging combines functionality, versatility and environmental friendliness, with a patented egg-shaped structure that is easy to assemble to protect different types of mouse products from damage during transportation and storage. Packaging made from recycled paper has natural colors and pulp-like textures, and its unique aesthetic emphasizes the importance of sustainability.
Prior to this, Acer's first eco-friendly notebook, the Acer Vero Hummingbird Future Eco-friendly Edition, has also been officially launched, with a 30% PCR body and a 50% PCR keyboard, reducing carbon emissions by about 21% each. The surface of the fuselage is not stamped with paint, which effectively reduces the VOC effect. In addition, the Hummingbird Future Eco Edition has a built-in VeroSense system, which helps users save energy and extend their service life through four usage modes.
Not only is the 30% PCR plastic used for the body shell, but the keycaps of the "Hummingbird Future Eco Edition" keyboard are made of 50% PCR.
In terms of packaging, its 100% recyclable material packaging and power case design that can be used as a laptop stand also won the 2021 Red Dot Packaging Design Award, fully demonstrating the pioneering and innovative nature of Acer's environmental protection initiatives.
The entire packaging is made of 100% recyclable materials, and the details of each part, such as the outermost
carton are made of 85% recycled paper, and the pulp molded protective pads on both sides of the laptop are made of 100% recycled paper after the lid is opened. In addition, the packaging bag, warranty statement and accompanying eco-friendly sticker are also made of 85%, 40% and 85% recycled paper, respectively, and the whole package is free of plastic content.
