The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation has been adopted by 27 member states
On March 15, 2024, the European Council announced through the Belgian presidency that the final version of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) has been adopted by the governments of 27 member states.
On March 4, 2024, the President of the European Council and representatives of the European Parliament reached a tentative political agreement on a proposal for a packaging and packaging waste regulation that aims to address the growing packaging waste challenge in the EU and harmonize internal packaging market and enhance the circular economy. The Recommendation considers the entire packaging life cycle and ensures the safety and sustainability of packaging by requiring packaging to be recyclable and minimizing the occurrence of problematic ingredients. At the same time, the proposal lists harmonization requirements to enhance consumer information. According to the waste treatment hierarchy, the purpose of the Recommendation is to significantly reduce the generation of packaging waste by setting binding reuse targets, limiting a certain type of packaging at a time, and requiring economic operators to minimize the use of packaging.
